Being Connected with HOKARI MINORU

Dear Everyone -

Another photography exhibition is now scheduled in Tokyo in conjunction with Japan Oral History Association Annual Conference. Everyone (inside & outside of the university and JOHA) is welcome. Please find the detail below.

When: Sep 6 (Mon) - 9/12 (Sun) 10AM to 5 PM, but the last day ends at 4 PM.
Where: Rikkyo University (Ikebukuro, Tokyo), at a Lobby, 7th building
Free Admission

We will publish an bilingual exhibition catalogue that can be purchased at the exhibition as well as by mail order (the detail will follow.) Any profit from the catalogue sale will be donated to the ANU Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship Fund in order to achieve its perpetuity.

This exhibition became possible with enthusiastic help and support from Junko Sakai, Satoshi Masutani and Toru Shimizu.

親愛なる皆様

東京での写真展開催が決まりました。日本オーラル・ヒストりー学会の大会に合わせての開催です。

期日：９月６日（月）－９月１２日（日）10AM - 5 PM（最終日は4 PMまで）
場所：立教大学（池袋キャンパス）の７号館ロビー
主催：日本オーラル・ヒストリー学会（JOHA）
協力：保苅実とつながる会、立教大学社会学部

入場無料。大学・JOHA関係者以外の入場も可能です。

また、このたび初めて写真展の図録を会場にて販売しますが、通販でも購入できます（詳細は後日発表します）。図録販売による利益は、奨学金の永久給付を目指し、ANU保苅実記念奨学基金に寄付します。

The exhibition “The Call of the Living Earth: Photographs of Australian Aborigines by Minoru Hokari” closed on June 20. Even though it was a very, very small exhibition, I have the impression that it attracted more attention than any of our previous exhibitions.

At first, even my colleagues had asked, “Hokari Who?” But on opening day, Naoko Terada (travel journalist) sent a beautiful bouquet, and there was a sense throughout the museum that this exhibition was not going to be like the others. Then scores of visitors came from afar specifically to see this exhibition, many copies of Radical Oral History and Kaze no Tabibito (“Traveler of the Wind,” a magazine that published an excerpt of the book along with photographs by Seiichi Motohashi) were sold, and Ronin Films came to film it all. Requests for informational postcards far exceeded the five or so inquiries that I had expected. Thus the initial reaction of “Hokari Who?” shifted to “Who IS this Dr. Hokari?!”

To be honest, I had been a little worried whether a collection of photographs taken by a graduate student would hold up as an exhibition in a public museum, free admission notwithstanding. But such worries turned out to be utterly needless; The composition of the photographs, their horizontals always true, made it clear that each scene, each frame had been photographed with the utmost care. While the exhibition consisted of more text than images, the photographs certainly held their own.

In putting together this exhibition more than any other, I have appreciated the support and cooperation of so many people, and I am grateful for the encouragement I received throughout the process. The satisfaction of knowing, from the visitors’ reactions, that this exhibition has been an inspiration is one of the privileges of being a museum curator.

The total number of visitors to the exhibition was 3,509.

「保苅実写真展　カントリーに呼ばれて　オーストラリア・アボリジニとラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」は、6月20日に終了しました。小さな、小さな展示でしたが、これまでのどの展示よりも注目されていることを感じていました。

職場の者たちも、最初は保苅さんって誰？だったわけです。ところが、まず初日に寺田直子様からとても素敵なお花が届き、館内で一気に今回の展示はどうもいつもと違うのでは、となったのです。その後もこの展示をめがけて大勢の方々が、遠方よりおこしくださったり『ラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー』や『風の旅人』が売れていったり、Ronin Films社の撮影があったり、また5件くらいかなと思った、案内はがきの請求も5件どころではなく、「保苅さんって誰？」、から「保苅さんって一体何者？」となってゆきました。

正直なところ、学生の撮影した写真が、無料とはいえ公立の博物館の展示になるだろうか？という心配はあったのですが、それは全くの杞憂でした。水平がいつもきれいにとれた写真は場面場面が大事に撮影されていることをみせてくれました。写真よりも文字のほうがずっと多い展示ではありましたがそれでも写真もきっちりと主張した写真展でした。

大勢の方の協力や支えをこれほど感じた展示はなく、支援を心強くおもいながら、作業できたことに感謝しています。この展示が誰かの何かのきっかけになっている、という手応えは学芸員冥利につきるというものです。

なお、来場者数は3509名を数えました。

Happy Birthday, my dear brother!

This summer is extremely hot. It was 41C two days ago. Kyle plays soccer in this heat all the time, so he became very tolerant of heat. Nicole is running around in our backyard with the sprinkler system on, wearing a bathing suit. We are consumed with FIFA World Cup Soccer these days and I have no idea how many different country uniforms that John purchased in the last several weeks.

By the way, what are you doing to me lately? You have been so quiet for the last few years and, all of the sudden, I have to handle too many things for you! Starting with the Exhibition, a request to hold another exhibition in Sapporo and Tokyo came to “Connection”, which is a newly formed organization that handles all the Minoru Hokari related events and plans. Yeah, it’s like a fan club. :-) As its name “Connection” implies, this is a necessary organization for us to be connected with you. Friends of mine and yours as well as people who only have met you through your book, offer me help for all the events.

3,509 people in total visited the exhibition. From Niigata, our parents, their friends and my friend who knew you from our childhood, and from Tokyo, Prof. Tetsuro Kato and his wife, your editor, Iku Hashimoto and Naoko Terada, a travel journalist, who always wishes to have met you in person, your old friend, Mihoko visited there. The fact that 16 copies of your books and 7 copies of “Kaze no Tabibito,”a magazine that published an excerpt of your book along with the photographs by Seiichi Motohashi were sold, seemed to startle the museum employees.

Irumi Sasakura will soon start the process of publishing an exhibition catalogue, for the future exhibitions including in Tokyo and Sapporo, a major city in Hokkaido. When I implied some monetary compensation for her, she politely declined by saying “I am well compensated with the fact that I am involved with Hokari Minoru.” What fortunate people are we!

For the last few months, I was too busy with the things that you brought to my attention, and did not have time to go to Yoga. While I was swamped, many thoughts came to me. You requested permission to 10 indigenous communities for your fieldwork. 7 ignored your request, 2 declined and only one community accepted you, which was the Gurindji. Before submitting your PhD thesis, you went back to Daguragu and asked for an approval, Old Jimmy said, “This book make me happy.”Also, you clearly stated ".....I also made an agreement with the Daguragu Community Government Council to share the copyright of the primary information – fieldnotes, tapes and photos – of my research. Helen Morris, one of the council members, complained that many researchers came there to study, but all the products had gone to Canberra. Accordingly, I added one more clause in our agreement saying I would submit my published works to the community." As I think of your sincere attitude towards the Gurindji people, anything that will be done under the name of “Connection” and “Minoru Hokari” has to honor your agreement with the Gurindji. I swear not to ruin your name.

As Old Jimmy said “Country called you,” I feel whatever relating to you happens when and how it should happen, just like you give me a “Go ahead” sign. I don’t need to force it to happen, people as well as things start moving when it should. I promise that I would never do anything that I am ashamed to report to you. I would never do anything that I cannot face to you in the sky, for you, the Gurindji people and for myself.

Unfortunately it has not been confirmed as of your 39th birthday, but I will have more great news for you real soon. Wait for it.

みぃちゃん

誕生日おめでとう。今年の夏も暑いです。おととい、41℃でした。猛暑の中でサッカーをしている海ちゃんは「こんなの何でもないよ」と平然としているし、香ちゃんは水着を着て、スプリンクラーの水を浴びて庭を走り回っています。我が家はWorld Cupにまみれています。ジョンが一体何カ国のユニフォームを持っているのか、その日の試合が始まるまでわかりません。

貴方は一体どういうつもりなんでしょうね。しばらく、音沙汰がなかったというのに、突然あれこれと嵐を起こして。写真展を中心に、その周辺でさまざまなことが起こりつつあります。札幌と東京でも写真展を、という希望が「保苅実とつながる会」に届き、計画は順調に進んでいます。そうそう、「保苅実とつながる会」という友の会を設立したのですよ。思いがけず保苅実関連のイベントが期待されていることが分かり、企画を進めるために必要な組織ということで。そして、名前のとおり、私たちが貴方とつながり続けるために必要な組織です。各イベント・企画毎に、保苅実をとりまく人々が手を貸してくださるのです。貴方に一度も会ったことのない人たちまでも。

北方民族博物館での写真展には、3,509人が足を運びました。新潟から私たちの両親が、彼らの友人である駒形夫妻が、小さい頃の貴方のことをよく知っている私の友人、桜井麻利子さんが、そして東京から一橋の加藤哲郎先生夫妻、御茶の水書房の橋本育さん、トラベルジャーナリストの寺田直子さん、貴方の後輩、敦井美保子さんが駆けつけてくれました。16冊の「ラディカル」が売れ、「ラディカル」の第二章の一部が掲載された雑誌「風の旅人」（2005年10月VOL.16）が7冊売れて、博物館の皆さんを相当驚かせたようです。

笹倉いる美さんが、東京と札幌での写真展に間に合うように、写真展の図録を手がけてくれることになりました。お礼を、と言っても「保苅実のことに関わらせていただけること自体がお礼です」などと言うのです。そんな出会いをした貴方と私の幸運を思います。

そして、敦井さんがWikipediaの保苅実の項目に、約束どおり、誕生日に間に合わせてエピソードを加筆してくれましたよ。

ここ2ヶ月ほどヨガに行く暇もなくなるほど、複数の関連案件を扱う中で、私はいろんなことを考えています。アボリジニのコミュニティでフィールドワークを望んだ貴方が、１０件のコミュニティに申請書を出し、７件からは回答がなく、２件からは拒否され、唯一許可してくれたのがグリンジでしたね。そして、博士論文を提出する前に、コミュニティを訪れて承認を求めたこと、ジミー爺さんが「いい本を書いてくれたもんだ」と喜んでくれたこと、「どんなに大勢の研究者をダグラグに受け入れても、研究成果はすべてキャンベラに行ってしまい、ここに戻ってこない」というダグラグ・カウンシルのメンバーの言葉を真摯に受け止めた貴方は、「このリサーチによって収集された情報は、保苅実とダグラグ・カウンシルに属する」という合意書を作ったのですよね。そういう誠実な貴方の研究姿勢を思うに、「保苅実とつながる会」の企画は、それを裏切って貴方の名前を汚すものであっては決してならないと思うのです。

ジミー爺さんが「カントリーがお前を呼んだんだよ」と言ったように、貴方に関することは、起こるべきことが起こるべきときに起こると、感じます。まるで、貴方が私に向けてゴーサインを出しているかのようです。無理してごり押しする必要はなく、前進すべきときに事が人が自然に動き出すのです。

そして、貴方に胸を張って報告できないことはしないと、空の向こうの貴方を見上げられないことはしないと、誓います。貴方のために、グリンジの人々のために。そして、私自身のために。

39歳の誕生日には間に合わなかったけれど、貴方に真正面から報告できることがこれから続きますから、お楽しみに。それでは、またね。

Hi Everyone -

Soon after Mino's passing in 2004, the two universities that he attended founded a memorial scholarship fund under his name, ANU and UNSW International House. We have raised about US$20,000 until now for both funds combined through the fundraising association in Japan, which does not include the family donation.

Recently, we again wired A$1702.80 to ANU and A1238.40 to UNSW. (Donation to ANU is from 8 donors, $30 from LOS CD sales and $240 from Mino's translations rescue plan. Donation to UNSW is multiple donations from one donor.

While ANU announces its winner in every July, UNSW International House does in every November. As we wait for an exciting news from ANU for now, this time I am happy to write about the winners for the UNSW IH Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship.

Many of you might have wondered, but for the last few years, I could not inform you the winners as I lost in touch with IH. Recently, I was able to receive the relevant and sufficient documents from Margaret Kwan at UNSW, who actually knew Mino in person. This is just wonderful.

UNSW IH announces its winners in every November for the following year’s recipients. Below are the winners for the year of 2009 and 2010.

2009 (announced in Nov 2008)

Mr. Hugh Bromley (Australia/British) double majored in Photovoltaic Engineering and Arts. He was engaged in 9-month working holiday in the US, Western Europe, India and South-East Asia. He offers such an international experience to the IH.

Ms. Arooke Kahawita (Australia) majored in Medicine. She is genuinely interested in different cultures and very actively involved in charity and community group.

2010 (announced in Nov 2009)

Mr Tristan Harley (Australia) is a law graduate student. From his experience in Guatemala, Canada, Cuba and Laos, he sees people from different cultures maintain a belief in humanity.

Ms Eva Buzo (Australia) majors in politics and international relations and plans to proceed into Law in graduate school. Her particular interest is with war-affected communities. She spent 5 months to work in Northern Uganda.

I am pleased that all of our contribution to the fund has been helping these young students to honor Mino's memories.

All the proceeds from any Mino related events have been and will be donated to the two funds. The funds will assure its perpetuity to give Mino an eternal life and connection to the world. Thank you very much for your support.

皆様

2004年に弟が亡くなってからまもなくして、彼が籍をおいた豪二大学（オーストラリア国立大学とニューサウスウェールス大学インターナショナルハウス）が、それぞれ保苅実記念奨学基金を設立しました。「保苅実記念奨学基金を募る会」を通じて、これまでに二基金合わせて、200万円ほどの寄付（遺族による寄付は含まず）が集まりました。

6年という年月が流れる中、寄付の動きは少なくなっていますが、先日ANU宛てに144,000円、UNSWに105,000円の送金をしたことをご報告します。（ANU:寄付者8名の他、LOSのCD売り上げから3,000円、断裁救済から24,000円、UNSW:寄付者1名による5回分の寄付）

ANUは毎年7月に、UNSWのインターナショナルハウスは毎年11月に翌年対象の受賞者を発表します。ANUの今年の受賞者発表を待ちつつ、今回はUNSWの過去二年間の受賞者をお知らせします。

過去2年間、受賞者の発表がなかったことを不思議に思われている方が多いかもしれません。インターナショナルハウスとの連絡が途絶えてしまったためなのですが、このたび、UNSWの大学本体に連絡をとり、弟を直接知るMargaret Kwanが基金に携わっていることがわかり、過去の受賞者の情報を送ってもらいました。

2009年受賞者（2008年11月発表）

ソーラー発電エンジニアとアート専攻。9ヶ月のワーキングホリディで、米国・西ヨーロッパ・インド・東南アジアを旅し、そこで得た国際経験をインターナショナルハウスのさまざまなイベントに貢献。

Ms. Arooke Kahawita（オーストラリア）

医学専攻。異文化に対する興味が大変深く、各種チャリティや地域グループの活動に積極的に参加。

2010年受賞者（2009年11月発表）

Mr. Tristan Harley（オーストラリア）

ロースクールの学生。ガテマラ・カナダ・キューバ・ラオスで過ごした経験の中で、文化が異なっても、人類への信頼は共通に存在することを確信。

Ms Eva Buzo（オーストラリア）

政治学と国際関係専攻。将来はロースクールへ。特に、戦争に影響を受けた地域への関心が深い。北ウガンダで5ヶ月間働いた経験をもつ。

保苅実を想う私たちの寄付が、これら国際的な経験と知識を持つ若い学生達を、少しでも経済的に支えることができることを嬉しく思います。

保苅実関係のイベントから得た利益のすべては、これまでもこれからも、これらの二つの基金に寄付されています。この基金はその永久性を守り維持し、保苅実に永遠の、命と世界へのつながりを与えてくれます。皆様のご協力に、心よりお礼申し上げます。

Hi Everyone -

There are a few more days until the closing of the exhibition on June 20. My children are moving toward summer vacation and I've had a few opportunities to introduce my brother to their classmates' moms. They are enjoying Mino's writing ("The Living Earth: The World of the Aborigines" from the "Conversations": As you know you can find it on this website.)

One of them suggested to have an exhibition in New York....That's not a bad idea, isn't it?

I have another news to share. Unfortunately, I have not promptly notified by either an author or its translators, but I found out that a book that Mino had worked on its English translation has been published in the US. "Otaku: Japan's Database Animals" (Hiroki Azuma, Minnesota Press 2009)

I negotiated for the Mino's credit with the author a few years ago. Mr. Azuma and, Mr. Abel and Ms Kono, the translators, kindly mentioned Mino's name in Preface and Introduction. It explains that this translation project began with an e-mail from Mino in February 2003, suggesting the original Japanese version to be translated in English.

Mino worked with Julia Yonetani only on the first chapter and had to stop it due to his illness. As Mr. Azuma wrote, the final version of the translation belongs to the two translators, but I am very pleased to see an idea and a work that Mino started has been completed.

One more thing is done! :-)

皆様

6月20日の写真展最終日まで、あと数日を残すだけとなりました。私の子供達は夏休みに向かってまっしぐら。そんな中、彼らのクラスメートのお母さん達に、保苅実のことを話す機会が何度かあり、新潟日報の連載「生命あふれる大地～アボリジニの世界」の英語版のコピーを渡しました。そのうちの一人が、ニューヨークで写真展をやったらどうかと提案してくれました。・・・悪くない話でしょう？

オーストラリア大使館のウェブサイトに、写真展情報が掲載されました。

そして、トラベルジャーナリストの寺田直子さんが写真展を訪問し、ブログに書いてくださいました。

寺田さんには、例の断裁二冊救済の件をブログで紹介していただいたことがあります。

このエントリを通じて、今でも、断裁の二冊購入を求めるメールが私のところに届きます。

さて、今回、もう一つニュースがあります。大変残念なことに、出版された時点で、著者からも翻訳者からも連絡がなかったため、今の今まで私自身知らなかったのですが、弟が英訳を提案した、東浩紀「動物化するポストモダン」の英訳版

"Otaku: Japan's Database Animals" (Hiroki Azuma,Minnesota Press 2009)が、去年の初めに出版されていたことがわかりました。

数年前に、東氏と翻訳者の方と、保苅実が米谷ジュリア氏と共訳した第一章のクレジットを明記してほしいと交渉した経緯がありますが、出版された本の、PrefaceとIntroductionで、東氏と翻訳者のお二人が、この翻訳版への保苅実の関わりについて、丁寧に書いてくださっています。この翻訳プロジェクトは、弟が2003年2月に東氏にメールを出し、英訳を出版したらどうかと提案したところから始まっています。翻訳作業途中で、弟は発病し、完成させることができませんでした。東氏が書いておられるように、この完成された英訳は、翻訳者のお二人に属するものですが、弟のアイデアと彼が開始した作業が無事に終了し、出版に至ったことを私は嬉しく思います。

というわけで、もう一つ、彼のやり残しを仕上げましたわ。

Dear Everyone -

There will be less than 2 weeks until the closing of the exhibition, June 20th. Several people told me about their upcoming visits, from Tokyo and Niigata. Thank you very much!

There have been a few student group tours from local middle schools. Irumi Sasakura, Curator, wrote to me:

Today I gave a talk on the photography exhibition in front of a group for the first time (not counting interviews).

The middle school students were a very attentive audience. Even their teacher had known almost nothing of the Australian Aboriginal peoples! Naturally I cannot expect such a brief encounter to change things significantly, but it is my hope that the story of Dr. Hokari has touched them, has left an impression somewhere in their hearts. Perhaps not only their exposure to Aboriginal culture but also the narrative of how this young man took wing to explore the wider world, soaring to great heights, will be an inspiration to these small-town middle school students.

This, too, has been one of our goals since the planning stages of the exhibition.

They all listened wide-eyed as I described how Dr. Hokari had sped across the Australian continent on his motorcycle. I also read to them from the beginning of "Radical Oral History". You know how middle-aged women tend to nod their heads when listening to someone talk? One of the boys kept nodding as he listened; I feel that Dr. Hokari must have made a strong impression on him.

Later, when I went to see how the kids were enjoying the exhibition, I saw a somewhat elderly couple among them -- they would first read the panel explaining the photograph, then take in the image itself, discuss something between themselves, and then move a few steps to read the next panel, look at the next photograph, and so on. They must have spent over an hour at the exhibition.

It is such a great pleasure to see the possibility that Minoru's life might have touched a local boy. This is exactly what I hoped for and one of the reasons why I agreed to have an exhibition in such a remote city in Japan.

Some people have asked for having an exhibition in Sapporo, a major city in Hokkaido as well as Tokyo, of course. I personally want to plan one in Niigata, where Minoru and I grew up and where my parents live. Perhaps one in Daguragu? We never have expected such a reaction and this exhibition was not planned or organized as "to be repeated" exhibition. Therefore, I realized that it was not clear where to contact with such an inquiry. I decided to create an organization "Connection (to Minoru Hokari)" which will be an official contact for any future Mino-related events from now on. (E-mail: info@hokariminoru.org) A committie will be set up for each event within the "Connection." If you wish to have an exhibition coming to your town or a group tour to Mino's hometown in Japan or any other exciting idea, please let us know.

As the name of this organization "Connection" implies, I hope to extend the Mino connection to someone in somewhere through many diffferent ways, with you who are connected with him. Thank you very much.

皆様

写真展もあと２週間を切りました。皆様が、東京から新潟から、ぎりぎり最終日の20日までの間に、網走まで足を運んでくださること、とても嬉しく思っています。本当にありがとうございます。

写真展には、地元の中学生の団体がいくつか訪れています。以下は、主任学芸員の笹倉いる美さんからのメールです。

私は今日人前でははじめて写真展の説明をしました。（取材以外で）

中学生たちはとても真剣に話をきいてくれました。先生でさえアボリジニを知らなかったというのです。もちろんそんな短い時間でどうかなるというものではないと思いますが、心のどこかにちょっとでも保苅さんが残ってくれるといいなぁと思っています。アボリジニ文化のこともですが、保苅さんという青年が大きな世界に羽ばたいて行ったことが、小さな町の中学生にも何かのきっかけになったりするといいなと。

このことは展示企画時からの、ねらいの一つでした。

保苅さんがオーストラリア大陸をバイクで駆け抜けた話しをしたら皆目をまるくしていました。ラディカルの最初の部分を読んでみたりもしました。ほら、おばさんになると、人の話をきくときにうなずくではありませんか。中学生の男の子の一人が私の話をうなずきながらきいているので、きっとあの子の心には保苅さんが残ったんだろうなと思っています。

そのこどもたちの様子を見に展示室に行くと、少し年輩のご夫婦が、写真展のパネルをひとつ読んで、写真を見て、それから二人で何事かを話し、また少し横に動いてはパネルを読んで写真を見てということを繰り返されていました。おそらく一時間以上滞在されたのではないでしょうか。

中学生の心に、弟の人生が少しでも残るということが、私は嬉しくてたまりません。大都市ではなく、地方の町で写真展を開催することの意義は、まさにそこにあるのだと思うのです。

写真展を、札幌や東京で、という声があがっています。是非、新潟でも、と思っています。このような反響を予想し巡回展を念頭において企画した写真展ではありませんので、問い合わせをどこにすればいいのか、困惑しておられる方も多いかもしれません。そういった声に応える形で、このたび「保苅実とつながる会」を設立し、関連イベント・事業等の窓口とすることにしました。連絡先はこれまでどおりinfo@hokariminoru.orgとなります。そして、「つながる会」内に、その都度、各種イベントの実行委員会を設定していきます。他都市での写真展開催希望や、オーストラリア・ツアーなど、アイデアがあればいつでもお寄せください。

「つながる会」というその名のとおり、保苅実とつながっている皆さんのご協力で、このつながりを大きく広げていく流れを作っていければと思っていますので、今後ともどうかよろしくお願いします。

Dear Yuki,

I'm writing to you because I wanted to say how important Mino's work has been to me over the years. I first came across his work when I began my PhD in Melbourne in 2002. He completely shifted my way of thinking on Aboriginal history from the perspective of an Asian migrant to Australia. His work continues to be important in my life as I continue my research in this area.

I wanted to let you and your family know that I would like to write a paper about the important contribution Mino made to Aboriginal history in the upcoming 30th anniversary special of the journal Aboriginal History (see attached). It will focus on Asian/Aboriginal intersections. I will spend time re-reading all his work and develop an essay on the importance of not forgetting his teachings.

I'm hoping you wouldn't mind if I sent you a copy to look over before I send it to the editors. Also, I know your brother was going to publish his book and I was wondering if there will be/is an english translation available.

I will be honored to read your paper and I strongly encourage you to apply for Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship at ANU for upcoming years. The topic that you are studying is exactly what Minoru had in his mind for his next project. On the way to Bloome for that project, he had to stop for his back pain near Alice Spring and discovered it was cancer. You can find the scholarship info on his website.

親愛なる由紀さん

お便りしているのは、実さんの研究が、何年にもわたって、私にとっていかに重要なものであるかをお知らせしたかったからです。初めて、実さんの研究に遭遇したのは2002年、私がメルボルンで博士号取得に向けて学んでいるときでした。実さんは、アジア人のオーストラリア移住の視点からアボリジニの歴史を考えている私の思考を、完全に転換させました。この分野でのリサーチを続けていくにおいて、彼の研究は私にとって重要なものであり続けます。

由紀さんとご家族にお知らせしたかったのは、ジャーナル"Aboriginal History"の30周年記念号に、実さんの研究が、アボリジニ史にいかに重要な貢献をなしたかという論文を書こうと思っているということです。論文の焦点は、アジア人とアボリジニの交差点です。実さんの論文等すべてに改めて目を通し、実さんの教えを忘れないことがいかに重要かというエッセイを書くつもりです。

ジャーナルの編集者に提出する前に、一度、私の原稿に目を通していただけないでしょうか。それと、弟さんが本を出版なさるつもりだったと思うのですが、現在もしくは将来、英語訳が入手できるでしょうか？

Dear Everyone -

Have you visited the "Episode" page on this website?

My brother, Mino, passed away on May 10th, 2004 in Melbourne, Australia and we had a memorial service on May 12th. He was cremated and we brought back his ashes to our hometown and buried him there. On June 19th, 2004, Mino's friends, teachers and editor, organized the event "Talking with HOKARI Minoru" at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.

As you know, he corresponded all his friends by e-mail during his illness, was encouraged by their love and support, continued to write until his passing. The invites for this event were sent to all the people on this original mailing list of Mino's. About 100 messages came to the organizer and were given to me and my parents. At that time, it was so hard for us to read all the kind messages and I had to stop since my tears were pouring out. It is still hard even now, but since then, we always wanted to share these messages with you in some way.

It has been 6 years and as I see myself still writing to you and the photo exhibition has been successful, I decided to introduce some messages on the Episode page on the website. Please contact me at info@hokariminoru.org if you prefer to be anonymous. I can use initials instead.

I still need more episodes for this page. As Mino said "Life is not about how long you live, but about how deeply you live," it does not matter if you know him for a very brief period. Any episode, short or long, is deeply appreciated. It is time to share your memory, how Mino lived his life, what he said in the conversation with you at a coffee shop, with those who have never met Mino. Thanks always.

皆様

先日お知らせしたEpisodeのページが動き出しています。

弟は2004年5月10日にメルボルンのホスピスで亡くなり、12日にメルボルンでメモリアル・サービスを行いました。お骨を日本に持ち帰り、新潟のお墓に埋葬したわけですが、2004年6月19日に、一橋大学佐野書院で「保苅実さんと語る会(Talking with HOKARI Minoru)」という集まりを、友人の皆様と一橋大の先生方、そして「ラディカル」の編集者・橋本育さんで構成する事務局が企画・開催してくださいました。

弟が闘病中に大勢の方とメールで交信を続け、皆様の愛情とサポートに感謝しつつ、最後の最後まで彼はメッセージを流し続けたわけですが、そのリストを元に、語る会の案内が送られました。事務局に寄せられた100件ものメールを「保苅実さんへのメッセージ」として、会の後に、いただきました。当時は、そのメッセージを目に通すことがとても辛く、途中まで読んでは涙で続きが読めず、の繰り返しで、今でもまだそうなのですが、その時から、弟がどのように皆さんと関わっていたのかが描写されている多くのメッセージを何らかの形で公開したいという思いを、私も両親も持っていました。

弟が亡くなり6年という月日が流れ、まだ私がこんな風に皆さんに向かって書き続けていること、無事に写真展が開催できたこと、を反芻したとき、いただいたメッセージを、Episodeとしてウェブサイトに残したいと強く思いました。事務局の方にも改めて確認し、いくつかのメッセージが語る会の冊子に掲載されていることから、何らかの形で活字になることを前提に書かれたメッセージだという判断をさせていただき、少しずつサイトに公開しています。このような形で掲載許可を求めるのは不適切というご指摘もあるかもしれませんが、もしも本名での掲載は控えてほしいというご希望があれば、至急info@hokariminoru.org宛てにご連絡いただければ幸いです。

また、このEpisodeのページは「追悼」というよりも、できるだけ元気だった頃の保苅実の姿を多く集めて、彼に会ったことのない人々に伝えていくことが目的であるという趣旨をご理解いただき、彼と接触した時間の長さには関係なく（彼自身が言っていたように「人生は長さではなく、深さ」ですから）皆さんの思い出にある弟の姿を、数行でも構いませんので、たくさんお送りいただきたいと願っています。どんな小さなエピソードでも構いません。どうかよろしくお願いします。

This is an article that appeared in a local newspaper, Abashiri Times, on May 14th, written by Mr. Atsushi Nakada, Irumi's colleague at the museum.

A Photography Exhibition on Aborigines

“The Call of the Living Earth: Photographs of Australian Aborigines by Minoru Hokari” — this is the rather long title of a photography exhibition currently at the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples.

This is an unusual exhibition for the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples in that its thematic subject is of the south: Australia and its indigenous peoples. The photographs are the work of Dr. Hokari, a historian who has taken an innovative approach to studying Aboriginal history — the practice of a “radical oral history” that respects, preserves, and prioritizes the narratives told by the Aboriginal people themselves.

While many of the photographs are of simple images, the dry, reddish-brown earth and distinctive Aboriginal features strike those of us accustomed to northern landscapes as fresh and revealing. Accompanying the pictures are excerpts from Dr. Hokari’s book. In pairing the images with the photographer’s own words, the exhibition attempts, in a sense, to retrace the trajectory of his research.

In some ways, this exhibition is an unprecedented, experimental endeavor for the museum. We invite you to visit and see for yourself whether it has been a success. Admission for the photography exhibition is free.

In connection with the exhibition, we have invited an expert to give a talk on May 29 on the theme: “Who Are the Aboriginal Peoples? Indigenous Australians: Their Past and Present.” We hope you will join us.

Friends of Mino and mine are visiting the exhibition from Tokyo as well as Niigata. This is a great news for the museum since most of their visitors have been limited to local residents or tourists. Total 8 copies of Mino's book have been sold there so far.

5月14日付けで、網走タイムスという地元新聞に掲載された「アボリジニ写真展」という記事は、北方民族博物館の学芸員・中田篤さんが書かれたものです。

「カントリーに呼ばれて　オーストラリア・アボリジニとラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」。少々長いですが、北方民族博物館で開催中の写真展のタイトルです。

北方民族博物館には珍しく、「南」のオーストラリアとそこに住む先住民アボリジニをテーマにしています。撮影者の保苅さんは、アボリジニの人びとが語る歴史を大切にし、「ラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」という新しい切り口で研究を進めてきた歴史学者です。

多くは素朴な写真ですが、赤茶色の乾燥した大地やアボリジニの独特の風貌は、北方地域に慣れた目には新鮮に映ります。そして写真の隣には、彼の著者から抜粋した文章も展示されています。写真と彼自身の言葉を組み合わせることによって、保苅さんの研究の足跡を再構成したものと言えるかも知れません。

今までの北方民族博物館にはなかった、ある意味、実験的な試みです。この実験が成功したのかどうか、それはご自身の目でお確かめいただきたいと思います。写真展のみの観覧は無料です。

また、5月29日には専門家をお招きし、「アボリジニってどんな人たち？オーストラリア先住民の経験と現在」という講座を行います。こちらにもぜひお越しください。

東京からも、新潟からも、保苅実つながりの来館があります。地元住民や観光客が主たる来館者だという北方民族博物館にはうれしい現象です。そして「ラディカル」が合計で8冊売れました。

5日5日に行われた日本オーラルヒストリー学会(JOHA)のワークショップで、写真展が紹介されました。酒井順子さん、大城道子さん、どうもありがとうございました。東京での開催を求める声が出たそうです。

写真家・露口さんの私への呼びかけのような追加エントリを読んで、思ったこと。

次の開催地をどこにするか、という話を始めている。「稀な展示」だという保苅実写真展をどこにつなげていくことができるのか。どういう場所で開催するのが最も効果的なのか、と考えている。人との「つながり」を求めた弟が、今、何を求めるだろうかと、次はどこへ行きたいか、何をしたいかと考える。私が、彼に何をしてあげられるかを、考える。

露口さん、そうです、これは始まりであって、着地点ではありません。私と笹倉さんとの出会いが、笹倉さんと露口さんとの出会いが、この写真展を生んだように、またこの写真展から新たな出会いが始まりました。笹倉さんは、「姉弟に呼ばれて」だと言っていました。「カイ」の皆様に、瀬川さんにどうかよろしくお伝えくださいませ。今後ともどうかよろしくお願いいたします。

皆様

私は、多くの誠実な人たちに囲まれた幸せな人間だと思います。アメリカ東海岸９日夜１０時過ぎに、毎年命日に流すメッセージを送信した後、西海岸の「テクニカルサポート」の親友hとSkypeでつなぎ、２時までかかって、命日にエピソード集のページを追加することができました。

Dear Everyone -

Today is May 10th and it has been 6 years since I lost my brother. It was in the middle of the night. My son, Kyle, who was 3 years old and I were in the bed when the phone rang. I woke up Kyle, dressed him up and irritably waited for a cab as they told me not to walk to the hospice. I got out of the car, held Kyle in my arm and ran to his room. Outside the room, someone told me he just passed away. I don't remember what I did with Kyle. I jumped onto my brother, whose eyes were closed, and screamed his name.

My parents told me that I came into the room just as he stopped breathing and everyone assured me that he heard my scream and he knew I was there before he left this world. I was also told that he shouted my name for a few times before he lost his consciousness.

Irumi asked me if I think Mino had expected that I would organize his photo exhibition as well as publish his work. I said I don't think so, but now I think he might have. He had a full faith in me. He knew I would do anything for him.

This is how the exhibition looks like.

You can see the photos and panels, which are the excerpts from Mino's book, "Radical Oral History" beside each photo. People read his writings and see the pictures, then grasp what Mino tried to deliver to the world. 5 copies of his book were already sold there. There are some updates on the exhibition on the website.

Due to some technical difficulties, I could not deliver the "episode" page on the website today. As you know me well by now, I will deliver it soon. I am sure Mino has no doubt about it, too.

親愛なる皆様

今日は5月10日、弟が亡くなって6年になります。それは真夜中のことでした。電話が鳴った時、3歳だった息子・海瑠と私は既に寝ていました。海瑠を起こして着替えをさせ、いらいらしながらタクシーが来るのを待ちました。危ないから、ホスピスまで歩いてくるなと、きつく言われたためです。ホスピスの前に止まったタクシーから降りて、海瑠を抱き、弟の病室まで走りました。病室の外で、看護婦に「たった今、亡くなりました」と言われ、息子をどこに座らせたのか、まったく覚えていません。目を閉じているベッドの上の弟に抱きついて、彼の名前を叫びました。

弟の息がすーっと消える瞬間に、私が病室に飛び込んだと両親に言われ、私の声は弟に聞こえたはずだと、私が来たことを知って、この世を去ったと、皆に言われました。そして、彼が意識を失う直前に、彼が私の名前を何度か叫んだ、とも。

笹倉いる美さんに「保苅さんは、遺した原稿を由紀さんが出版するだろうとは思っていたでしょうけど、写真展まで開催するとは予想していたでしょうか？」と聞かれた時、「写真展は、予想外だったと思います」と答えたのですが、もしかしたら予期していたかもしれない、と今は思います。彼は私を絶対的に信頼していました。私が彼のためになら、どんなことでもすると知っていたと思います。

写真家の露口啓二さんが、展示の様子を撮ってくださいました。

そして、写真展に足を運んでくださったライターの谷口雅春さんのブログ・エントリと旭川の考古学者・瀬川拓郎さんのブログ「北の考古学」にも記載があります。

露口さんの撮った写真からお気づきになると思いますが、展示は保苅実が撮った写真と、その横のパネルには「ラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」からのテキストが書かれています。来館者は、彼の文章を読みながら写真を見、保苅実が世界に伝えようとしたことを理解しようとします。これまでに、5冊の「ラディカル」が、保苅実とこの場で出会った人の手に届きました。随時、ウェブサイトに写真展の報告をしていますので、どうぞお時間のある時にでも覗いてください。

テクニカル上の困難にぶつかり、今日のこの日に「エピソード集」を公開することがかないませんでした。が、私がそれを近いうちに完成させるということを、もう皆さんはご存知ですよね。弟もそれを信じて疑ってないと、私は確信しています。

5月3日付けで、網走タイムスという地元新聞に「アボリジニの歴史紹介　～故・保苅実氏の写真展」という記事が掲載されました。

5月6日付けで、北海道の雑誌「カイ」のブログにエントリを見つけました。写真展を手伝ってくださった写真家の露口啓二さんが、昨年10月に写真展開催までの途中経過のエントリも書いてくださっています。

半年以上も前に、そんなあたりをうろついていたわけですねぇ、としみじみ。

4月30日付けで、ある訪問者のブログにエントリが出ました。

5月1日付けで、北海道新聞に「豪州アボリジニ写真32点で迫る　～網走で故・保苅さん作品展」という記事がでました。

網走というと、北の果てという印象がありますが、東京から日帰りできます。私が乗ったのは羽田発朝8時の便で女満別空港に9時45分着、車で博物館まで20分程度でした。近くに、網走監獄もオホーツク流氷館もあります。

本日、北海道北方民族博物館にて、「保苅実写真展　～カントリーに呼ばれて　オーストラリア・アボリジニとラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」が開催となりました。この企画をしてくださった学芸員の笹倉いる美さんからのメールです。

おかげさまで無事準備は完了しました。

由紀さん無しでは到底ありえなかった展示です。由紀さんがいたからこそ実現できた展示です。

展示をし終わったわたしの感想はこじんまりとはしていますが、品がある展示かな、というところです。同僚がたまに展示準備の様子をみにきて、かけっぱなしになっている映像をみながら、お姉さんは出ていないの？と言っていました。本編はこの先どうなるのでしょうね。

保苅さんの本とかそういうものと一生縁がなかっただろう事務のおじさんたちが、「保苅さんが・・・」と言っているのを聞くのは楽しいですよ。

ほぼ満月でのオープンというのはねらったわけではありませんが、偶然そうなりました。写真は33点展示ですが、このうち1点は露口さんが撮影したラディカルの表紙ですから保苅さんの写真は32点。保苅さんが生きた年と同じになりました。こじつけ、ともいえるかもしれませんが、この展示におこった様々なことを考えると全てに何かがあるように思えてきます。

この企画も一見わたしの発案に見えますが、保苅さんがカントリーに呼ばれたように、わたしもこの展示をするようにとどこからか呼ばれたんだと思っています。これがいろいろな意味で稀な展示であることを私は保証できると思います。

I am pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition. (Note: There is already one local newspaper article on May 1st and a visitor wrote a blog about it on April 30.)

Title: "The Call of the Living Earth: Photographs of Australian Aborigines by Minoru Hokari"

Place: Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples

*** It is in Hokkaido, a northern island in Japan, but it is just 2 hours flight from Tokyo and there is famous "Abashiri Prison Museum" (a Japanse version of "Alcatraz") nearby.

I have received a following mail from my friend, Irumi Sasakura, who works at the museum.

I am happy to report that preparations for the exhibition have been completed.

Yuki-san, this exhibition would never have been possible without you. It is thanks to your efforts that we were able to bring it about. Having finished curating and preparing the exhibits, my impression is that it is a very tasteful and dignified, if small and intimate, exhibition. My colleagues, who occasionally dropped in to see how the preparations were coming along, would watch the looping video (”The Story of Hokari Minoru”) and ask, “Isn’t his sister in it?” I wonder what is going to happen with the full documentary film?

It is also gratifying to hear the clerks, who otherwise might never have encountered Hokari-san’s book or considered the issues he raises, talking about him and his work.

Although we had not intentionally planned for it, the exhibition opened on a full moon. Of the 33 photographs exhibited, one is of the book cover of Radical Oral History, taken by Mr.Tsuyuguchi, so strictly speaking, Hokari-san’s works number 32 – the same as the number of years he lived. Perhaps I am reading too much into such connections, but after all that has occurred in the process of putting together this exhibition, I cannot help but feel that everything has a deeper meaning.

In that sense, while this project may at first appear to have been my idea, I believe that, just as Hokari-san had been “called by the Country,” I, too, was “called” by some place to put on this exhibition.

I can assure you that this exhibition will prove to be an extraordinary occasion in many ways.

Dear R.T.

I was listening to "Forever Young" and got really emotional.

As I watched my dad interacting with my daughter, I could not help but thinking how Mino would have been around with my children. He was thinking to spend some time in the US, close to me and them, around the Xmas time in 2003 if he did not get sick or even planned to seek for a position in the US.

I was away from my parents and Japan for a while after his passing. This trip was good and I am glad that I did it, but at the same time, it was emotionally hard for me to breathe the air there and revisit what had happened to him.

Many people imagine what he would have done if he had lived longer, but it is true that he has done a lot for his short life and I am certain he was fulfilled as he told me. I just have to keep thinking about what I can do for him and his work. I have one more thing to do....publish his book in English. I am working on it.

Dear Everyone -

I was in Japan for 10 days from 3/26 to 4/4. It was so nice to see my children having a great time with their grandparents and great grandma, who just turned 89. It has been almost 4 years since I was there last. We spent 3 days in Tokyo, then moved to Niigata. I also took a day trip to Abashiri, Hokkaido, to see the Museum where Mino's photo exhibition will be held. Below is the details.

I have to tell you...this exhibition has been carefully thought out and planned by Irumi Sasakura, who met Mino after his passing through his book "Radical Oral History", found me on the web, and we became good friends. A photographer in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Keiji Tsuyuguchi, who also met Mino through his book, wrote about Mino on his blog. This blog entry inspired Irumi, who works at the Museum, brought me an idea of the exhibition.

In Hokkaido, I met her for the first time after a few years of e-mail only relationship. It is such a beautiful museum in the midst of vast nature. She walked me through the whole exhibition one by one and I found it as an amazingly fulfilling learning experience since it was with her who has extensive knowledge about the subject. Until now, the museum has never dealt with anything other than Northern Peoples such as Ainu and Inuit. It is fascinating to see Mino travels all the way to Hokkaido, a northern part of Japan, to present what he experienced with the Gurindji people.

At the exhibition, you will visit Australia, meet the Gurindji in their country through the pictures that Mino took, read excerpts from his book, and, at the end, you will grasp what Mino learned from the Gurindji and what he wanted to share with the rest of the world.

Thanks again for all your help to make this event possible. It has been a long way...but we did it.

Another Mino project that I am working on is to collect Mino's episodes for the website. If you have any interesting Mino episode that you can share with people who never got a chance to meet him, please write a few sentences and e-mail me at info@hokariminoru.org. The first deadline is 4/30 and I am planning to present them on the website on May 10. Any small episodes will be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

皆様

わずか10日間の日本旅行を終えて、日曜にアメリカに戻りました。子供たちが、私の両親と89歳になった祖母と楽しい時間を過ごせたこと、とても嬉しく思います。東京で三日過ごし、その後新潟に移動したのですが、東京の滞在中に、一人で北海道・網走まで行ってきました。

今月4月29日から6月20日まで北海道立北方民族博物館で開催される「保苅実写真展　～カントリーに呼ばれて オーストラリア・アボリジニとラディカル・オーラル・ヒストリー」は、学芸員・笹倉いるみ氏によって注意深く計画・デザインされました。弟の死後、「ラディカル」を通じて保苅実に出会った彼女は、姉である私を探し当て、大変親しい関係になりました。同じく「ラディカル」で弟に出会ってくださった札幌在住の写真家・露口啓二氏のブログで、写真展というアイデアを思いつき、私に提案してくださり、そこから長い道のりを経て、今回の開催となりました。露口氏も、さまざまな形で展示にご協力いただいています。

数年にわたるe-mailだけでのお付き合いの後、今回初めて彼女に会いました。北方民族博物館は、自然の中に凛として建つ美しい博物館です。数時間かけて、彼女による詳しい説明を聞きながら、一点一点時間をかけてすべての展示を拝見しましたが、これほど充実した時間を博物館で過ごしたことはありません。今回の写真展まで、この博物館での展示はすべてアイヌやイヌイットなど北方民族に限ったものでした。オーストラリアで人生を終えた保苅実が北海道にたどりつき、グリンジとの経験を、日本の、北海道の人々と共有することに、感動を覚えます。

展示では、保苅実が撮った写真を通じて、人々はオーストラリアの地を踏み、グリンジ・カントリーで人々に出会います。「ラディカル」の抜粋を読みながら、一枚一枚の写真を追い、最後には保苅実がグリンジから学んだこと、世界に伝えたかったことを理解できることでしょう。

どうか機会を作って、この写真展に足を運んでくだされば幸いです。そして、改めて、この写真展開催にたどり着くまでの皆さんのご協力に、心からお礼申し上げます。

今週の木曜に、アメリカを発ち、日本に向かいます。2週間足らずの短い家族旅行ですが、3年ぶりの日本です。子供たちも大きくなり、さまざまな日本の文化を満喫することだろうと楽しみです。東京に3泊する間に、前々からお知らせしている写真展についての打ち合わせのため、日帰りで網走に行きます。さて、ようやくこの写真展の日程が以下の通り、決まりましたので、お知らせします。

保苅実が亡くなり、今年5月で6年目を迎えます。このMLの受信者は、彼を直接知る人達に限らず、その後の"Being Connected"の活動により保苅実を知ることとなった人達も多く含まれるようになりました。そして、年末のＭＬでお知らせしたように、Wikipediaに保苅実の項目を作ってくださる方まで出現しました。

貴方が大事にしている保苅実の思い出を、生前の彼と出会えなかった大勢の方と共有する時期に来ているとは思いませんか？

メモリアル・ウェブサイト"Being Connected with HOKARI MINORU"に、エピソードのページを作ろうと思うのです。長くても短くても、どんなに些細な思い出でもいいので、保苅実のエピソード（小学時代、中学時代、高校時代、一橋学部時代、一橋修士時代、オーストラリアUNSW時代、オーストラリアANU時代）を、info@hokariminoru.org宛にお送りください。第一回めの締め切りは4月末とします。エピソードがだぶることは当然予想されますが、こちらで編集します。

Dear Everyone

We have decorated our Christmas tree. I have done Christmas shopping, finished wrapping all the presents and kept them hidden in the attic. I have purchased the candies and else for stockings (for my husband, John, myself, Kyle, Nicole and Mino). A small ham is in the freezer and a cake was ordered. Kids' excitement is at the very peak and we have a few more days to go.

How are you all spending this holiday season?

My sister-in-law is getting married on January 1st. Since this is a very big traditional wedding, I thought it would be interesting for my parents. My mother is joining us and arriving here on 27th. I had to warn her to be ready for my kids' constant fight throughout a day, which my mother has never experienced. I just cannot figure out why they fight so much and why Mino and I did not at all...Well...both of my kids are a kind of bossy..tell each other what to do while Mino was a complete slave to me under the condition of my absolute love for him. It is a big question how John and I can keep our sanity during this holiday...Oh yes, Santa and Mino are watching us all....

Mino...I have two big news for you.

1. The Photo Exhibition

The Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples is ready to proceed for Mino's photo exhibition. We have received the official permission from the Guringji! Let me tell you how we got here. It was a long long way...

In January 2009, I consulted Andrew Pike (Ronin Films) and Prof. Ann McGrath on how to obtain a permission from Gurindji. They asked Brenda Croft (a photographer and a Gurindji) for an advice and were referred to Colvin Crowe (Northern Territory Government). I got in touch with Colvin in February and was advised with requirement for a permission until the end of March. At that point, I knew what to do, but could not find the right contact person to proceed. On 13th of April, I found a fax paper written by Mino, asking for a permission to stay with Gurindji, addressed to Sean Heffernan (CEO of Daguragu Council at that time), by accident. This would have been his stay in Summer 2003 if he had not gotten sick. I forwarded it to Colvin and he gave me the contact info on Sean (Currently, CEO of Katherine West Health Board). I e-mailed Sean in late May, sent several pictures, Roslyn Frith (Mino's friend refered by Sean) went to see Gurindji and obtained the final permission in October.

If I had not found the Mino's fax, I would not have obtained the permission. This is just amazing.. Things about Mino often turn out like this.

I am happy to announce that the Museum is planning to hold an exhibition from late April till mid June 2010 and the details will follow.

2. Wikipedia

Wikipedia has a Japanese article for Minoru Hokari now. I was contacted by a person who read Mino's book "Radical Oral History" and notified me that he wrote the article. Wikipedia was my next major project, but someone who was inspired by Mino's work started writing about him. I cannot imagine how pleased Mino is. I will have to translate it in English in near future.

This spring, I am planning to go back to Japan with my family and stopping by at the Museum in Hokkaido. Unfortunately the exhibition will not be ready, but it will be nice to step into the place that will be filled with Mino's presence and to meet my friend, Irumi who works there and suggested the exhibition to me. Just so you know...we have never met! I deeply appreciate all of your support and help to make things possible for Mino. He is a very fortunate person to have friends like you all.

The final news for you. I have made some changes on www.hokariminoru.org. Please visit when you have a chance. Now, the Mino related news are on the top page as a form of blog. Hiro Obara, my best friend, spent time to made this change for me. Thanks always, Hiro.

親愛なる皆様

今年も、高さ2.5メートルほどのクリスマスツリーの飾り付けを済ませました。クリスマス用のショッピングも、プレゼントのラッピングも終え、屋根裏にこっそり隠してあります。夫ジョンと私と海瑠と仁香瑠とミノルのストッキングに詰めるキャンディや小物も用意しました。義父夫婦と私たち家族が食べるハムは冷凍庫に、ケーキも注文しました。子供達のクリスマスへの期待と興奮はピークに達し、あと数日でクリスマスを迎えます。

皆様は、この季節をいかがお過ごしですか？

元旦に、義妹の一人が結婚します。いわゆるアメリカの典型的な大きな結婚式なので、参加するのも面白いのではと思い、両親を誘った結果、母が来ることになりました。12月27日着、1月3日発の短い滞在ですが、久しぶりの再会でとても楽しみです。子供達が一日中ケンカのしっぱなしだと、母に警告してあります。私とミノルはほとんどケンカしなかったので、母には想像もつかないと思うのです。姉弟、兄妹の違いはあるものの、同じ4歳違いでどうしてこんなに違うのかとしばし頭を抱える私ですが、よくよく考えてみれば、私の子供は二人とも「仕切り屋」で、お互いにああしろこうしろと命令ばかりしています。ミノルは、姉である無条件の愛情の下に、完全なる奴隷でした。結局、上が男だとか女だとか、年齢がいくつ違うとか、そういうことではなく、性格の違いによる相性なのだろうと、最近思います。いずれにせよ、このクリスマス休暇中、ジョンと私がどうしたら発狂せずにいられるか、というのは大きな課題ですが、サンタとミノルが空から見守ってくれて（見張っている？）いることを忘れずに、努力します・・・。あぅ。

さて、二つ大きな報告があります。

１．保苅実写真展

網走にある北海道立北方民族博物館が、写真展の開催に向けて動き始めました。グリンジから写真の使用許可をもらったのです！あぁ、思い返せば長い長い道のりでした。

Ronin FilmsのAndrew PikeとANUのProf. Ann McGrathに、グリンジからの許可をどう申請したらいいかと相談したのが、今年の1月でした。二人が写真家でGurindjiであるBrenda Croftに相談し、Northern Territory GovernmentのColvin Croweに問い合わせるように、と指示してくれました。2月に入り、Colvinにメールし、どういう写真の許可が必要で、どのようなプロセスで取得すればいいのかについて、3月末までやりとりを続けました。本来であれば、直接グリンジに会って写真を見せ、許可をとるしかないのですが、アメリカに住んでいる私にそれができるわけはありません。どうすべきかを理解しつつも、そこからどうやって進めばいいのか、まったくの行き止まりだったのです。そして、4月13日に、偶然ミノルの荷物を整理していて、彼自身がグリンジに滞在許可を求めたファックスを見つけました。あて先はDaguragu
CouncilのCEO、Sean Heffernan。これは彼が発病しなければ、実現したはずの2003年夏のフィールドワークの許可申請です。このファックスをColvinに転送すると、現在はKatherine West Health BoardのCEOとなっているSeanの連絡先を教えてくれました。Seanとつながったのが5月末のこと。展示に使用したい写真を送り、ミノルの友人であるRoslyn Frithがダグラグに行き、直接グリンジから使用許可をもらってくれました。それが10月のことでした。

ミノルのファックスを見つけてなければ、この許可は取れませんでした。ミノルに関係することは、こんなふうに展開することが多いのです。

というわけで、博物館は写真展を2010年4月下旬から6月中旬に開催の予定で準備を開始したこと、皆様にご報告申し上げます。

2. Wikipedia

Wikipediaに保苅実の項目を作るという次に考えていた大きなプロジェクトが、ある日突然舞い込んだメールで、既に開始されたことを知りました。「ラディカル」を読んで保苅実の活動に興味をもってくださった方が、Wikipedaに項目を作ってくださったのです。中立的な立場でない人間が記事を書くことは禁じられているため、どうやって項目を作ったものかと考えていたのですが、あっさり解決しました。「ラディカル」の一読者が記事を書いてくれたとミノルが知ったら、どんなに喜ぶことでしょう。近い将来、これを英語に直さなければなりませんね。

来年の春、家族で数年ぶりに日本に帰る計画をたてています。その際に、網走の博物館に立ち寄ります。残念ながら、写真展の開催時期ではないのですが、ミノルの存在で一杯になるその場に足を踏み入れることができるだけで、どんなに嬉しいことでしょう。そして、写真展を提案してくれた私の友人、いる美さんに会えます。実は、私たち、まだ一度も会ったことがないんですよ。

こうやって、すこしずつ、ひとつずつ、ミノルに関連する諸事を実現できるのは、皆様の援助があるからこそです。皆様のような友人をもつ弟は、本当に幸せ者です。
