I have another great news!

I am sorry for the delay on this annual news. ANU's 2010 Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship winner is Dr. Yuriko Yamanouchi (Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, University of Technology, Sydney), the first Japanese recipient.

The below is a comment from the committee.

The committee selected Dr Yuriko Yamanouchi for the scholarship. She will examine the history of relationships between Japanese migrants and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in northern Australia. Using oral history interviews, she will also explore how contemporary generations with this dual-heritage experience their identity as both Indigenous and Japanese. Yamanouchi’s research will not only contribute to Indigenous Australian history but also to a little-researched facet of Japanese migrant studies. She will use the Minoru Hokari Scholarship to conduct fieldwork on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait. Her research experience as an early-career post-doctoral scholar combined with the strong support she has from Professor Martin Nakata, the leading researcher in Torres Strait Islander studies, ensures that she will make effective use of the scholarship. Yamanouchi’s research project on the history and legacy of Japanese migratory workers and Indigenous Australians extends and celebrates Minoru Hokari’s research. We look forward to her future publications on this fascinating chapter in Indigenous Australian history.

This year's award is A$2500 as the fund needs more funding to achieve its perpetuity of annual A$5000 scholarship. The fund balance is now AUD$64,168 and it requires another AUD$50,000 to secure the perpetuity.

Along with the publishing contract, I signed an agreement with the UNSW Press to transfer any proceeds from the Mino's English book, directly to the ANU Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Upcoming photography exhibition catalogue sale is designed specifically for fundraising for this fund. Once we set up to receive payment from overseas, I will announce the details to you all. I appreciate if you consider purchasing a copy to support the fund.

I am firmly convinced that any form of Mino's research should be returned to the Indigenous Australians.

毎年5月に発表するこのニュースが、今年は遅くなりました。オーストラリア国立大学保苅実記念奨学金の2010年の受賞者は、山内由理子氏（Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, University of Technology, Sydney）です。初めての日本人受賞者の誕生を大変嬉しく思います。選考委員会のコメントは以下の通りです。

Dear Everyone -

Finally, the day has come! Thank you all, for waiting for all these years.

After more than 6 years since Mino's passing, I am proud to announce here that I signed a contract with UNSW Press today to publish Mino's English book. I deeply appreciate continuous help and support of Prof. Ann McGrath and Prof. Tessa Morris-Suzuki.

Mino had prepared this English manuscript way before he started writing his Japanese book, which was published in Japan in 2004, a few months after his passing. This English book is not a translation of his Japanese book and it contains more thorough and deeper analysis and stories.

It really has been a long way, but I never gave it up at any moment. The book will be published in 2011. I could not help but smiling and crying at the same time that Mino can finally return a favor to the Gurindji people and the country who accepted him to learn their histories.

Wherever it is, I will be there at the book launch, of course. My husband already agreed to it. :-)

このニュースをついに発表することができることとなりました。

保苅実が亡くなって6年以上の月日が流れましたが、このたび、UNSW Pressと、英語版著書の出版契約を結びました。この日を迎えるまでの、Prof. Ann McGrathとProf. Tessa Morris-Suzukiの絶え間ないご協力とご尽力に心よりお礼申し上げます。

この英語版原稿は、「ラディカル」の執筆のずっと以前に用意されたものであり、決して「ラディカル」の英語訳ではありません。弟は、まずこの英語版著書を出版するつもりでいました。英語版著書は「ラディカル」よりも、より深く広く、彼のリサーチと分析と主張を展開していますので、「ラディカル」に批判的な方も、好意的な方も、保苅実の研究に対するこれ以上の議論は、この英語版を読まれてからにしていただきたい、と素人ながら思います。（笑）

長い道のりでしたが、出版を諦めたことは一瞬たりともありません。2011年の出版予定です。これで、弟を受け入れてくれたグリンジのカントリーと人々に報いることができると、溢れる喜びと涙をかくせません。

Another Minoru Hokari Scholar was announced in May. There was the first Japanese applicant for the scholarship this year. 2009 winner is Ms Abby Cooper.

The below is a comment from the committie.

The number of applicants is less than in 2008 but the quality remains good and the topics interesting.

The committee selected Cooper for the award because her application is not only strongly historical but also connects with other disciplines and approaches, and has a fundamental connection with the Indigenous community. Her topic is the relationship between the sporting history of the Wimmera and southwestern Victoria and the development of Indigenous identities. Sport is a relatively unusual subject but an important area of Indigenous and Australian life with which the public can readily engage and accord esteem. Her project is clearly defined and has the enthusiastic support of a number of substantial scholars and agencies. There is no doubt that Cooper has a good relationship with her informants. It is also commendable that she has made provision for the repatriation of her interviews and that these will be available for use by the community, the Brambuk Aboriginal Cultural Centre and by museums, in a variety of alternative formats. Her application is specifically directed at further developing community involvement and the sharing of ideas, through meetings and film-making. We believe that the resources provided by the scholarship are therefore well directed and that Cooper is appropriately prepared to undertake these activities. She is in her third year of doctoral studies at ANU, working in the ACIH.

今年の申請者数は昨年よりも減少したものの、研究内容の質は依然として高く、興味深い研究課題であった。2009年の受賞者はMs. Abby Cooper。彼女の課題は、Wimmera とSouthwestern Victoriaの スポーツの歴史である。これは珍しいトピックであると同時に、アボリジニとオーストラリア人の生活に欠かせない分野である。Cooper氏のプロジェクトは明確に定義づけられており、多くの研究者や団体から熱心な支持を得ていること、情報提供者ときわめて友好な関係にあることは明白である。この奨学金の使途目的は、ミーティングや映画製作を通じて、コミュニティとのかかわりを深め、アイデアを共有することであり、今回の受賞にふさわしいと判断された。彼女は、ANUの博士課程3年目であり、ACIH (AUstraian Centre for Indigenous History)にて勤務している。

Mino's treasure from his field work, the precious recorded tapes of Gurindji's oral history, were donated to Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).

遺品であるフィールドワークで録音した貴重なグリンジのオーラルヒストリーのテープを、Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS)に寄付。
